A painting entitled A Sense of Longing

"A Sense of Longing" by Justin Warren

Exploring connection through color, composition, and flow

Justin has been creating at The Studio for more than 15 years, developing a style that is both expressive and distinctly his own. His featured piece, A Sense of Longing, draws viewers in through bold color, layered shapes, and a composition that feels both structured and fluid at once.

For Justin, art is about more than the finished piece. It is about the process, the environment, and the sense of flow that comes from creating alongside other artists. His work reflects that energy, inviting people to slow down, look closely, and feel something personal in what they see.

We asked Justin to share more about his work, his process, and what this piece means to him.

An Interview with Artist Justin Warren

What do you usually like to work on when you’re here?

I usually like to work on abstract art using acrylic paint on canvas. I also like to paint animals and some landscape scenery.

What does your Studio time mean to you, and what helps you feel comfortable or focused?

It means getting to come out to a place that gives me space to be creative. I feel comfortable and focused when I’m around other artists. Seeing others create is inspiring to me.

What would you want someone to know about you as an artist?

I hope that my art is relatable and that people feel joy and excitement when they see what I create. I hope to inspire other artists to create what makes them feel these emotions, too.

For this featured piece, what do you want people to notice first?

I made this painting a long time ago. I really hope people feel captivated by my use of shapes and colors, and by the contrast and expression that comes through.

What does it feel like when you’re creating a piece like this?

When I make abstract art like A Sense of Longing, I achieve a flow. Everything comes easily, and I feel the creative energy moving.

What part of this piece are you most proud of?

The composition is my favorite part. Without each part, the painting wouldn’t become what it is. Every part is important to the piece.

How do you decide when a piece is finished?

Sometimes I consult with others, but mostly I can feel when a piece is done by the look of it and the feeling I get. Occasionally, I go back and add details I think might improve it later.

How does it feel to have your artwork featured in the Spring Art Show and Sale?

It’s amazing. I feel appreciated for my artwork, and I’m excited for people to see my most recent projects. My work has evolved and is always improving over time, and getting to show that feels very special.

If someone brings your art into their home, what do you hope they feel?

I hope people feel a sense of awe. I hope they have a warm feeling, knowing the piece they chose fits with them.

Justin’s work continues to evolve, shaped by time, experience, and the creative energy he finds in The Studio. Pieces like A Sense of Longing offer a glimpse into that process, inviting viewers to slow down, look closely, and find their own connection within the work.
