50 YEARS
Living Opportunities Inc. Marks 50th Anniversary: A Journey of Empowerment and Advocacy
May 13th, 2024
Medford, Oregon — As we reflect on the past five decades, Living Opportunities Inc. celebrates its 50th anniversary of unwavering commitment to empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. From humble beginnings to transformative impact, our journey has helped shape the landscape of disability services in Jackson County and the State of Oregon.
A Different Era: Life in the 1970s
The 1970s were a time of rotary phones, record players, and a Rogue Valley that looked vastly different. While most people had access to education, affordable housing, and employment opportunities, those with intellectual or developmental disabilities faced a starkly different reality. Institutions were the default option, public schools excluded diverse learners, and shelter workshops provided meager income.
The Birth of Living Opportunities
In May 1974, Living Opportunities emerged from a collective dream. Picture parents of individuals with developmental disabilities and passionate community advocates huddled around a kitchen table. Their vision? Something better for their loved ones—a life beyond institutional walls, abuse, and isolation. With the opening of our first home in 1975, we embarked on a mission to provide training, support, and advocacy.
Our Impact and Ongoing Commitment
Over the years, Living Opportunities has been a catalyst for change:
- Fairview Closure: We helped champion the closure of Fairview, Oregon’s state institution, advocating for community-based alternatives.
- Supported Living Model: We pioneered a supported living model, enabling independence and community integration.
- Employment Transformation: We transformed employment services, creating diverse, equitably compensated jobs for individuals with disabilities, and assisted other agencies to do the same.
- Ending Sub-Minimum Wage: We fought for fair wages, and provided career counseling statewide, putting an end to sub-minimum wage practices.
- Innovative Technology: We harnessed assistive technology to enhance services, communication, and independence for those supported.
Gratitude and Celebration
None of this would be possible without our dedicated supporters, community partners, staff, and the individuals and families we serve. As we look ahead, Living Opportunities remains committed to our vision: “A welcoming community that embraces individuality and passionately supports and empowers people.”
Join us throughout the year as we celebrate our 50th anniversary and Save the Date on August 23rd for a community celebration at RogueX. Together, we’ll continue shaping a brighter future for all.
