Meet the Jupiter String Quartet

When four young musicians formed a quartet in 2001, they looked to the night sky for a name. Jupiter was the brightest planet at the time, and its astrological symbol looks like the number four. The name stuck, and the Jupiter String Quartet has been shining ever since.

It's also a family affair: violinist Meg Freivogel and violist Liz Freivogel are sisters, and cellist Daniel McDonough is Meg's husband. Together with violinist Mélanie Clapiès, they make up one of the most respected quartets in the country.

The founding members grew up in musical families where chamber music was played, and went on together to the New England Conservatory of Music. The quartet has performed across North and South America, Europe, and Asia, and won the Cleveland Quartet Award from Chamber Music America in 2007. Since 2012, they have been artists-in-residence and faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where they direct the chamber music program.

"One of the mainstays of the American chamber-music scene."
