A Place to Call Home, At Last

A Move Years in the Making

Dana Brasher lived in an attic apartment for 13 years. While some attic apartments are charming, this one was not. It was unheated and unairconditioned, with loose electrical wires dangling from the ceiling. The staircase leading to the attic was unsafe and resulted in one near-catastrophic fall.

Securing a new apartment for Dana took several years and a great deal of behind-the-scenes work. First, Dana needed to approve the place he would be moving to. He was looking for a ground-floor apartment in a location that would make it easy for the crew he works with each day to pick him up. Just as importantly, everything had to align to secure a voucher from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to cover a portion of the rent.

In 2023, the first apartment Dana was approved for seemed perfect. It was in the same complex where Dana’s sister lived. His Supported Living Staff Kim Karikka helped Dana pack up his attic apartment and shop for needed furniture, including a new queen-sized bed from Garrison’s Furniture.

At the very last moment, the move fell apart. Despite earlier approval, the apartment complex had not completed the required financial paperwork correctly, and, at the last minute, did not allow Dana to move in. Dana was left in his attic apartment with his belongings packed and nowhere to go. Garrison’s refunded the cost of the bed and generously offered to store it indefinitely for a $100 deposit.

“I am happy. I am calm. This was my dream.” — Dana Brasher

In January of 2026, Dana’s Supported Living Staff found another apartment that seemed ideal. It was on the ground floor and in an accessible location. Once again, the team worked through the required approvals and coordination needed to move the process forward. HUD approved a voucher, making the remaining rent affordable for Dana.

On the morning of January 17, Dana finally moved out of the attic apartment for good. Kim helped him pack and settle into his new home. He now sleeps on the queen-sized bed Garrison’s had stored for the past two years.

Of his new living situation, Dana says, “I am happy. I am calm. This was my dream.”
