At Living Opportunities, we are in the business of providing support to people with developmental disabilities in all facets of their lives. We help people identify their wants, needs and desires, then design individual supports, customized to ensure that the person will be safe, healthy and happy as he or she pursues their dreams. Everything begins with the person figuring out the answer to one question—“What do I want?” Each person’s answer is unique…

David, a die-hard fan of Metallica and devoted NASCAR enthusiast, already knew what he wanted when he was a young man—a truck, a job, an apartment, and a girlfriend. When his parents retired and moved to Ashland in the mid 90’s, they searched for a service provider that would support David as he developed an independent life, an agency they could count on to be there for him when they no longer are. Living Opportunities started working with David with placement in a recycling job at a distributor’s warehouse, followed by a stint on a grounds maintenance crew. At the same time, Supported Living staff taught David the basics of housekeeping. He moved into his own apartment, got a driver’s license and used his wages to buy a truck. The year 2002 was momentous for David—he married Angie and got a job at an auto body shop. Community Living Specialist Jerry Swisher, who checks in regularly and assists with money management, describes David as having an upbeat attitude. “He establishes a rapport with people he meets and has made particular friends with the folks at Music Head and Sam Goody. He takes life seriously and values his independence. He really enjoys working.” Others note that David is very gracious, giving regular compliments to others and trying to make the best out of everything. The auto body shop closed in 2008, but David got a great new job at The Grange Co-op in Ashland. CEO Barry Robino has been particularly impressed with David’s dedication and enthusiasm. As for David—he loves his job– “This is family here”.
